The Chennai Metro Rail Project Tunnelling work commenced at Washermanpet metro station site today (01.10.2012) by breaking the Diaphragm wall.
Presently the package UAA01 is done by TransTonnelstroy-Afcons as joint venture The tunnelling operations commenced on 01/10/2012 from Washermanpet station to Chennai Central The Tunnelling distance between Washermanpet to Chennai Central is 1349.9 meters.
The construction site is maintained with international safety standards for both tunnelling as well as station construction.

Testing and commissioning for TBM has started at Washermanpet Underground Station. 7 temporary rings are proposed to be built and will be used to cut the D wall 800mm thickness during the first week of October.The Tunnel Boring Machine will drive towards Broadway.
It would be good if the suburban train stations and MRTS is also upgraded simultaneously - better lighting, cleaner environment, services for travellers, working escalators and lifts - rather than be left behind as poor cousins.
